At carnival one often thinks of Cologne, Dusseldorf, Mainz, Rio de Janeiro, etc. .. . Even in Sardinia, this festival is celebrated. Well known is the traditional Rider Festival Sa Sartiglia in Oristano. Stunning Equestrian Games draw viewers in its spell. During the main competition, the rider provided with a mask try to impale in full gallop through a lance a star-shaped ring. Depending of the number of stars the riders get - according to an old tradition - it will be a good year for the annual harvest.
Carnival offers a contrast in the village Mamoiada. Here they celebrate a rather demonic, dark carnival. The parade take twelve with animal skins and some cow bells clad figures - called Mamuthones. Their faces are covered with grim, black wooden masks. They are losers who became serfs. They live in complete dependence of eight Issohadores, dressed in bright red and white traditional costumes. None of them wears a mask or cowbells. They have a lasso in the hand, with which they lie in wait for the Mamuthones and spectators. Who from the "slavery" will be free, need to spend a round in the next bar .....
In addition to these traditions in many small communities will be organized great, humorous and beautifully decorated Mardi Gras parades - so here at Valledoria or 40 km away in Tempio. The carnival of Tempio attracts several thousand visitors in its spell. 5 days transform this town into a "mini-Rio.
Sardinia welcomes its guests at Easter time in his beautiful flower costume that fills the air with thousands of scents. In the Valledoria's Area Eastern is celebrated with traditional processions. One of the most important events is "Lunissanti" on Monday of Holy Week in Castelsardo (celebrated with Gregorian songs). At the same time Alghero attracts its guests with the Sardinian-Catalan Easter week in its spell.
On the penultimate Sunday of the month of May, the provincial capital of Sassari will be transformed into a giant theater stage. It is a day scene of the "Cavaccata Sarda" (= Sardinian Cavalcade), a riding party, performed by more than 3,000 people in traditional costumes from all the provinces of Sardinia. The festival is divided into three main factors: the parade of the costumes for several hours in the morning, the excitement of horse racing (il Palio) in the afternoon and the traditional songs and dances at sunset. The day of the Cavalcade is a deep plunge into the past of a mysterious and enchanting island. Furthermore, in late May / early June in many towns and villages local committees organise for everybody (locals and visitors) open air lunches with Sardinian specialties to pay homage to their patron saint.
Also sunbathers will find their right place - 25-30°C felt temperature are not uncommon. A sun craem should be a constant companion. Depending on the weather conditione at the end of March / early April, one could attempt the first bath in the sea. In mid-May the local sea along our coast reaches comfortable 20°C.
